Two-day police remand for Bharti

A Delhi court on Tuesday remanded AAP MLA and former Delhi Law Minister Somnath Bharti to two-day police custody in an attempt to murder case lodged by his estranged wife Lipika Mitra.

Allowing the Delhi Police plea for his custodial interrogation to make recoveries, Metropolitan Magistrate Manika remanded the former Minister to police custody till October 1.

Seeking five days’ remand of the MLA, counsel for the investigating agency submitted that his custody was also required for probe relating to his dog ‘Don.’

According to the complaint, on March 19, 2013, when she (Lipika) asked Bharti to pay rent for the house, he not only tried to strangulate her but also unleashed his dog on her despite knowing that she was in the seventh month of pregnancy.

Counsel for the police also referred to this allegation in his argument before the court, submitting, that the dog had bitten Ms. Mitra multiple times.

Opposing the police remand, counsel for Mr. Bharti said that the police had sufficient time to make recoveries in connection with the case.

Mr. Bharti’s counsel further said the dog was available wherever the probe agency needed it.

Mr. Bharti had on Monday surrendered before the Dwarka police station on a Supreme Court direction. The police formally arrested him on Tuesday morning.
