Two militants killed in Manipur encounter

Two AK 47 rifles and ammunition recovered

Assam Rifles troopers killed two militants at Phungyar in Ukhrul district of Manipur during a fierce exchange of fire over the week-end.

The bodies are yet to be brought to Imphal for identification and post-mortem. Sources said that there was a chance encounter between troopers of 44 Assam Rifles and the militants in the mountains at Phungyar with a heavy exchange of fire for more than one hour. Later, the other militants fled. The troopers recovered two AK 47 rifles and ammunition from near the bodies.

Meanwhile, police in Imphal town nabbed a militant Limilal Mate of United Kuki Liberation Front. One jeep was found from him. Police have also arrested a woman Bimola Taorem said to be a member of United Revolutionary Front. She is involved in extortions from members of the public. Personnel of 18 Sikh Regiment arrested an insurgent of People’s Liberation Army identified Abdul Rahman. One loaded 9 mm pistol was recovered from his possession.

Besides, 9 Assam Rifles troopers arrested six insurgents of People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Pro) during a combing operation. Two lethod guns and three rifles with assorted ammunition were recovered.

Security has been beefed up in view of the elections in Manipur.

The last phase will be held on April 17.
