Tripura BJP chief attacked, chased by irate mob

Tripura State BJP president Sudhindra Dasgupta and some of his accomplices were attacked at Sonamura subdivision in Seepahijala district on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred a day after Mr. Dasgupta called for a resistance against ‘political hooliganism’ that damaged party’s prospects in recently held in the three-tier panchayat elections.

Police said a crowd interpreted the vehicle of State BJP president and manhandled the occupants at south Maheshpur in Sonamura around 6 p.m. On duty security men rescued them and took them to nearby Yatrapur police station to save them from the irate mob.

“We are under seize, a large crowd has assembled outside with intention to assault us. We are very scared,” Mr. Dasgupta tod newsmen by phone from the police station.

He blamed ruling CPI(M) cadres for the attack within assembly constituency of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar. He said they went to the area to visit BJP follower families subjected to atrocities after three-tier panchayat elections. BJP sources said, State president, a panchayat candidate of party Ershad Mia and police security staff Badal Mustafa attached with Mr. Dasgupta, sustained minor injuries in the assault.

A contingent of Tripura State Rifles was deployed around the police station.
