Demanding that the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) be done away with, Janata Dal (United) chief Sharad Yadav on Sunday warned the Union Government against “insulting” Indian languages by imposing the test on students.

Facing protests from students, who feel that the CSAT gives applicants who write the exam in English an edge, the government has put the August 24 preliminary tests of the Civil Service Exams on hold.

“The way the future of Indian language students is being destroyed by the Union Public Service Commission, it is like cutting down our mother tongues. The UPSC is ensuring that the number of Indian language-speaking students in the exam is coming down each passing year,” he told reporters.

He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh of hypocrisy as they address world leaders and ask votes in the name of protecting the language but are allegedly promoting the “UPSC mindset” of Anglophilia.

Replying to a query, Mr. Yadav said his party’s alliance with the Rashtriya Janata Dal in Bihar will continue despite opposition from a section of the JD(U).

The latter, led by former rival Lalu Prasad Yadav, backed nominees of the JD(U) in the recently concluded Rajya Sabha polls.
