Two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants and one solider were killed and a policeman was injured in a gunfight in Sopore on Friday. Two security personnel were injured in a grenade attack in Anantnag.

“The bodies of the militants were recovered from the encounter site,” said Director-General of Police S.P. Vaid.

The soldier has been identified as Sepoy Sawar Vijay Kumar.

The slain militants were identified as Riyaz Ahmed Dar from the Chinkipora area in Sopore and Khursheed Ahmed Malik from Aarihal in Pulwama. Locals people said Malik, an engineer, had joined militancy just four days ago.

The Kashmir and Jammu regions witnessed multiple street protests on Friday, three days ahead of the Supreme Court’s scheduled hearing on the petitions challenging Article 35A, which grants special privileges to residents of the State. Protests were held in Anantnag, Srinagar and Rajouri. The Hurriyat and the JKLF held demonstrations in the Valley. Over 300 lawyers in Jammu passed a resolution for retaining Article 35 A.
