Retd. ASI convicted in graft case

A retired Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of police Bijay Kumar Nayak was convicted and punished with one year imprisonment by vigilance court of Berhampur on Wednesday.

According to Superintendent of Police (SP) of Berhampur vigilance division, Manoranjan Panda, this police officer had been caught red-handed while he was accepting bribe of Rs.7,500 from a complainant on June 13, 2007. At that time Nayak was posted in Kavisuyanagar police station of Ganjam ditrict. He had demanded this bribe not to arrest two persons mentioned in an FIR and to remove their names from the charge sheet .

Dhirendra Kumar Pattnaik, special judge, vigilance court, Berhampur, pronounced the judgment and sentenced Nayak to undergo rigorous imprisonment for one year and to pay fine of Rs.5,000. Nayak has already been retired from service on superannuation.
