Republic Day celebrated peacefully in J&K

The Republic Day celebrations in Srinagar passed off peacefully without any untoward incident reported in the valley. People stayed indoors and the streets were deserted except for the thousands of police personnel and soldiers that dotted the city.

State Divisional Commissioner Rohit Kansal hoisted the tricolour at the Bakshi Stadium amid a three-tier-security.

Contingents from the J-K Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF) and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) took part in the parade.

Senior separatist leader and chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat had called for a shutdown and asked people to stay away from the Republic Day celebrations.

In Jammu, Governor N.N. Vohra took salute at the march past at the Maulana Azad Memorial Stadium amidst unprecedented multi-tier security.

For the first time during a Republic or Independence Day, mobile and Internet services were uninterrupted in the Kashmir valley.
