Two brothers of the 20-year-old college student, who was gang-raped and killed in Barasat in North 24 Parganas district last week, met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday and demanded that the accused be hanged.

A number of villagers planned to accompany the brothers of the victim, but all but five of them were stopped at some distance from the Secretariat.

“We do not want a job or money as compensation … we want the accused to be hanged,” one of the brothers of the victim told journalists.

The incident that occurred on June 7 triggered outrage and a Trinamool Congress MP and a State Cabinet Minister had to face public ire when they visited the area the following day.

Hardly had the dust settled when, in another incident on Tuesday, a 14-year-old girl was raped and killed at Gede in Nadia district.

Referring to the incidents, Chief Secretary Sanjay Mitra said the government had “zero tolerance” for crimes against women and would take “the harshest possible measures” against the offenders.

A few arrests were made in connection with the two cases, Mr. Mitra said, and added: “If required, we will seek the death penalty for the accused.”

While eight persons were arrested in connection with the incident in Barasat, three were held in the case of Gede rape, he added.
