Raigad train derailment toll mounts to 22

With four more persons succumbing to their injuries, the death toll in Sunday’s derailment of the Diva-Sawantwadi Road Passenger train in Maharashtra’s Raigad district has climbed to 22.

Most of the 157 injured were moved to different government hospitals in Mumbai.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan paid a visit at the Sion Hospital and took stock of the medical care being provided to those injured. He said that the state government would explore the possibility of providing compensation to the victims of the tragedy.

The Konkan Railway authorities managed to clear the track on early Monday morning. The route was opened after almost 20 hours.

"Track was given clearance at 4.07 am on Monday and first train passed at 5.02 am," a Central Railway official said.
