Protests over the 'mysterious' death of a 16-year-old female student continued here on Thursday, with activists of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) staging a stir outside Chief Minister Manik Sarkar’s residence.
On Wednesday, students from various technical institutes had blocked a busy road in the city to demand a swift investigation into the death of Anwara Choudhury, a student of Women’s Polytechnic, a State govt-run institution.
Anwara, who was staying at her maternal uncle’s house in Pratapgarh here, died on April 10 after she was admitted to G.B.P Hospital with severe abdomen pain. Her fellow students have alleged that she was either poisoned or assaulted to death.

Two reports – one submitted by a committee that inquired into the ‘gross negligence of treatment’ of Anwara at the hospital and the other of the post-mortem examination conducted after exhuming her body– were allegedly not made public.
Soon, protests started erupting in the city, with members of the TMCP, NSUI, ABVP and others gathering outside the police headquarters to demand the arrest of the accused.
“The culprits are being protected by the ruling CPI(M) and the police are being prevented from making progress in the case,” said Vicky Prasad, TMCP state president, on Thursday.

Security stepped up
Meanwhile, security has been stepped up in the city in view of the ongoing stir. Non-partisan students of different technical institutes are also planning to hold a rally soon.
