The West Bengal government has set up a one–man inquiry commission under retired Calcutta High Court Judge Sushanta Chatterjee, to probe the July 21 1993 police firing on a youth Congress workers and supporting during a ‘March to the Secretariat' programme. The Trinamool Congress observes the day as ‘Martyr's Day.'
Announcing this , a government release said the firing killed 13 allegedly innocent people besides injuring several others. Mr. Chatterjee retired as acting Chief Justice of Orissa High Court
The commission will probe the events relating to the killing as also the people involved and responsible for the incident. The terms of reference includes inquiry into the present condition of the victims' families and the status of the police cases registered on the incident. The commission has been asked to assess and recommend compensation if any that is required to be paid to the victims.

It may be mentioned that responding to a call of ‘Mahakaran Abhijan' (march to secretariat) given by the West Bengal Pradesh Youth Congress, members and supporters of the youth Congress (of which present Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was a leader at that time) started assembling at the scheduled points within one kilometre radius of the Secretariat. They had also assembled at Kalighat Street since that morning.
