Police fires in air to control irate mob in Assam

Police fired in the air to disperse a mob that attacked Rangia police station in Assam’s Kamrup district on Thursday following the death of a person handed over to police by people in connection with an alleged chit fund fraud case.

Protesting the death of the person belonging to their village Pitambarhat Bajali, over 100 people blocked the main road, gheraoed the police station and pelted stones at the building injuring a police personnel there and a journalist nearby, police said.

To control the irate mob, police resorted to lathicharge and bursting tear gas shells before firing 15 rounds in the air, the sources said.

Though the situation was brought under control, tension prevailed in the area, they said.

Last Thurday investors in a private chit fund company, ‘Sun City Infracon Corporation Ltd’ here, handed over to police its general manager and two field workers allegedly for not making payment of their investment maturity amounts totalling nearly Rs three crore, the sources said.

One of the two field workers on falling ill on Saturday was admitted to Rangia Civil Hospital from where he was shifted to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital after he went into a coma and died on Thursday.

Angered by his death, the people of his village attacked the police station today, police said, adding, ten person were detained in connection with today’s incident.
