An FIR was filed against socialite Sheetal Mafatlal of the Mafatlal industrial family on charges of theft and cheating by the police here on Tuesday.
The police action came a day after the Bombay High Court directed the police to register a complaint after hearing a petition filed by her brother-in-law Ajay Mafatlal, alleging that the police failed to file an FIR despite his repeated complaints. He claimed that Ms. Mafatlal had stolen four paintings which belonged to the two companies of the Mafatlal family.
The paintings were valued at Rs. 13 lakh by the police. “She has been booked under the IPC Sections 380, 406, 411, 414 and 420 along with Section 120 (B). The complainant said that she stole the paintings on or before July11, 2011 from Hochest House in the city,” a senior police officer said.

The complaint states that Ms. Mafatlal, along with the Director of the company, took four paintings worth Rs.13,72,950 from the company office to her residence first at Mafatlal Bungalow. She then allegedly shifted those paintings at an undisclosed location.
“Investigation is still going on. We will decide about the further course of action only after proper investigation,” the police told The Hindu .
