Parrikar, 10 others elected to Rajya Sabha

Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Samajwadi Party national general secretary, Ram Gopal Yadav are among the 10 declared elected unopposed in the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh. Their election was announced by the Returning Officer after the last date for the withdrawal of nominations on Friday.

Others elected are Tazeen Fatima, Javed Ali Khan, Neeraj Shekhar, Ravi Verma and Chandrapal Singh Yadav (Samajwadi Party), Rajaram and Bir Singh (Bahujan Samaj Party) and P. L. Punia (Congress).

The elections were necessitated following the end of term of 10 Rajya Sabha MPs from Uttar Pradesh on November 25.

In all, 11 nominations were submitted for the biennial polls, but the nomination of an Independent candidate, Qamar Ahmed, was rejected after scrutiny of papers. Once his nomination was rejected, it was clear that the other 10 candidates in fray would be elected unopposed.

Sharma elected from Uttarakhand

Manorama Dobriyal Sharma, Congress nominee for the Rajya Sabha seat from Uttarakhand, was elected to the Rajya Sabha, on Thursday.

Ms. Sharma, the former Mayor of Dehradun, was the only candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat that was left vacant when Bharatiya Janata Party leader Bhagat Singh Koshiyari was elected to the Lok Sabha.
