One injured in Manipur grenade attack

A 15-year-old domestic help was seriously wounded on Saturday when a China-made hand grenade was lobbed at the house of Abdul Salam, a businessman dealing in foreign goods imported from Myanmar, at Lilong Haoriebi in Thoubal district.

The injured boy, identified as Mohammad Ayasuddin, is in a critical condition in a private hospital in Imphal. Sources said that unknown persons lobbed the powerful hand grenade at the house of Mr. Salam at 10 am on Saturday. He was not at home at that time.

Police have learned that some militants had given extortion threats to Mr. Salam who has been doing roaring business. He had declined to pay up. Police have registered a case, but no arrest has been made. There is no claim from any underground organisation.

There was a general strike on Saturday in Ukhrul district of Manipur protesting against the bombing of the office of the Tangkhul Students' Union. Sources said that on Friday night unidentified persons entered the office premises and exploded the bomb. Though there was no casualty, but the office was extensively damaged.
