Schoolchildren are the newest ‘recruits’ of the Office of the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer.
Students across the Capital have been given the responsibility to encourage and send their parents, friends and neighbours to vote. Schools have been asked to distribute a pre-set ‘pledge letter’ issued by the Office of Delhi CEO among students, which has to be duly signed and submitted back to the educational institution.
The letter to the parent reads: “Dear Mummy-Papa, I know you love me very much and that you work hard day and night to secure my future. My future is also directly related to a strong democracy. So I want you to take a pledge today, that you will go out and vote on February 7. I am sure you will keep your promise.”

The pledge notes that parents too should encourage other relatives and friends to vote. Parents have welcomed the initiative stating that “it is a good way to educate and engage school children in the election process”.
Said Vimi, parent of a child studying at St. Columba’s School: “It is a very innovative and fun way to get children from across the city to participate in the polls, and become aware of civic and other issues here. It can also be used as a great introduction to the political system in the country, what we stand for and to teach them the basics of being a good citizen.”
