No stream-wise cut-offs in DU

The first list for over 54,000 seats will be announced on June 25

Students planning to take admission in Delhi University will not have to worry about stream-wise cut-offs any more as the university is going to do away with the system from this year.

For a long time now, DU had been announcing stream-wise cut-offs with the percentage for humanities students being the lowest and for commerce students the highest.

“There will be no stream-wise cut-offs from this year. We have decided to make the cut-off uniform for students from different streams. This has been done to avoid any kind of disadvantage to students,” DU spokesperson and Joint Dean of Students' Welfare Malay Neerav said.

“For example, if the cut-off for English honours was 87-90 percent, a student with humanities stream was able to get admission at 87 percent and the cut-off for a science student would be slightly higher. From this year, all students will get admission on the basis of the same cut-off regardless of their stream,” he added.

Another reason behind doing away with the stream-wise cut-offs this year is the introduction of disadvantage system under which if a student is applying for honours in a subject which he has not studied in Class XII, 2.5 percent marks will be deducted from the best-four. For example, if a student wants admission in History honours and he/she has not studied history in Class XII, 2.5 percent marks will be deducted from the best-four percentage.

“After implementing this new rule, if we had still continued with stream-wise cut-offs, it would have created a lot of confusion for the students,” Mr. Neerav added.

The decision, however, will not apply to minority colleges such as St Stephen's and Jesus and Mary College, which have their own admission rules and come out with separate cut off lists.

DU has also directed its colleges to do away with riders from this year and not to impose any extra eligibility criteria on students seeking admissions to the varsity.

Admissions to over 54,000 seats in the undergraduate courses will begin from tomorrow. The online registration process will be open till June 15 while offline forms will be accepted at the registration centres from June 5 to June 15.

The first cut-off list will be announced on June 25.
