‘No pigs on Gurgaon roads by end of year’

The Millennium City may be free from the menace of stray pigs by the end of this year, said Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) Commissioner Vikas Gupta.

Mr. Gupta said the pigs on the roads are reared by 20-25 families, who allow them to roam freely during the day. “Though there is a provision for six months’ jail for this under the Haryana Municipal Corporations Act, it is a non-cognisable offence. For this reason, the police cannot take action against these repeated offenders. Now, we have requested the Deputy Commissioner to issue directions on stray pigs under the Criminal Procedure Code making it a cognisbale offence,” said Mr. Gupta.

He said a similar campaign was launched in February this year, but it had little impact.

Meanwhile, Gurgaon District Magistrate and Additional Deputy Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh has issued orders under Section 144 of the Cr.PC, under which the Joint Commissioner of the MCG has been directed to get the pigs captured within the corporation limits.

The orders said the municipal authorities would ensure that the pigs do not manage to come back or are brought back within the corporation limits.
