Nitish Kumar warns middlemen

Rs. 2,400 cr. disbursed to Indira Awas Yojana beneficiaries at massive camp

The Bihar government will not tolerate middlemen, warned Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stating that his government would strive to give the poor their due.

To eliminate middlemen, a massive camp was organised across 534 blocks in the State where Rs. 2,400 crore was disbursed under the Indira Awas Yojana (IAY).

Launching the camp from Danapur here, the Chief Minister said IAY beneficiaries would receive their due in two instalments of Rs. 30,000 and Rs.15,000 for construction of their houses. They will have to finish construction within six months.

However, there is a provision for legal investigation against the beneficiaries if they fail to complete construction within a stipulated time frame, Mr. Kumar said. Likewise, no middleman or any other agency, which swindled the poor, will be tolerated, Mr. Kumar said.Noting the flood of complaints he had come across during his pre-election ‘Vishwas Yatra,' Mr. Kumar said such camps helped loosen the stranglehold of middlemen.

The procedure of receiving money through the IAY had been simplified, he said, noting that the beneficiaries now had to merely come forward and state whether they had previously availed of the scheme money or not.

Urging the beneficiaries to take good care of their passbooks, the Chief Minister expressed the hope that the banks in the State would play a proactive role in the disbursement process. A similar disbursement camp will be held in December, Mr. Kumar added.
