Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam ended his hunger strike after four days on Sunday night once the Maharashtra government agreed to look into his demand to reduce power tariff in the city.
Congress leaders Manikrao Thackeray and Nasim Khan met Mr. Nirupam at the venue of his fast in Kandivali, a western suburb of Mumbai on behalf of the Chief Minister and conveyed his decision to consider his demands.
“We are happy but we want to see whether the State government actually implements what it has promised. We will then decide on the future course of our action,” a source close to Mr. Nirupam told

Last week the Maharashtra cabinet had agreed to reduce the power tariff by 20 per cent across the State except in Mumbai. Mr. Nirupam started his agitation outside the Reliance Infrastructure’s Divisional Office at Kandivali, north Mumbai demanding the tariff subsidy be extended to Mumbai also. The Anil Ambani-owned power company provides electricity in his constituency.
In response to Mr. Nirupam’s demands the government has promised to conduct an audit of power companies in the State.
