May 06, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:22 am IST - New Delhi:

More than two months after incumbent Police Commissioner Alok Verma vacated it, a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) official was finally appointed to the post of Director-General (Prisons) here on Thursday.

Sudhir Yadav, a 1985 batch IPS officer of the AGMUT cadre, was appointed to the post as per an order issued by Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung; Mr. Yadav is currently posted as Special Commissioner (Provisions and Logistics) in the Delhi Police.

Mr. Yadav, whose appointment was cleared by Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain on Wednesday before being sent to Raj Niwas for approval, had earlier served as Director General of Police of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in 2013 before being repatriated to the Delhi Police.

The post of DG (Prisons) had been lying vacant since Mr. Verma took over the reins of the Delhi Police from Bhim Sen Bassi on February 29 this year.

On April 19, 1982-batch IPS officer J.K. Sharma, who currently heads the Home Guards as DG was handed the additional charge of DG (Prisons) by the Delhi Home Department.

The charge, however, was relinquished by Mr. Sharma just a day later with him contending his appointment had not been approved by Mr. Jung.
