Naroda Patiya riot case: Maya Kodnani out on 3-month bail

Gujarat High Court on Tuesday granted three-month temporary bail to Maya Kodnani, a convict in the 2002 Naroda Patiya riots case, on medical grounds.

The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday granted three-month bail to former Gujarat Minister and prime accused in the Naroda Patiya massacre case Maya Kodnani on medical grounds.

Ms. Kodnani had sought a six-month bail saying she was suffering from tuberculosis of the intestine, apart from heart ailments and depression.

A Division Bench of Justices K.S. Javeri and K.J. Thaker heard her plea. The Bench asked Ms. Kodnani to submit the details of her travel outside Gujarat for treatment to the Special Investigation Team probing the Gujarat riot cases.

The 58-year-old politician is a key accused in the Naroda Patiya massacre case. She was sentenced to life by a special court here, but SIT, the prosecuting agency, wanted to appeal for enhancement of sentence to capital punishment. The State government is yet to give its consent to this.

Ms. Kodnani is the only female politician to be convicted in the Gujarat riot cases.
