April 11, 2012 04:59 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 11:37 pm IST - HYDERABAD

Real-time date received by the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre showed that minor tsunami waves reaching a height of 30 to 40 c.m. were generated near Cambell Bay Island in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on Wednesday afternoon.

According to T. Srinivas Kumar, in-charge of the Centre, it is unlikely that the height of the waves off the Andaman & Nicobar coast would rise further.

Meanwhile, the alert for the Indian East Coast has been continued as waves of less than two metres height might be generated between 5 p.m. and 6.30 pm. This conclusion has been reached on the basis of mathematical models developed by the Warning Centre.

In Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy announced that there was no tsunami threat to the State's 1,000 k.m.-long coastline. However, as a precautionary measure, Collectors of the nine districts have been placed on high alert and asked to standby to evacuate people living close to the coast. About 40 families living on Hope Island off Kakinada were evacuated by the East Godavari district administration.
