A man of about 25 has been arrested in Chhattisgarh over abduction, rape and torture of a 10-year-old girl in Jashpur district of the State. The girl was abducted on her way back to her place from school in Karanjtoli village in the district in northern Chhattisgarh. Later, she was tortured and raped. The tribal girl was living with her family members in Karanjtoli, while her parents were staying in Gumla district of Jharkhand.

Jashpur Superintendent of Police J.S. Meena said the accused is a resident of Jariya village, near Karanjtoli. “The man is little over 25. He was arrested soon after the case was registered (on Tuesday), produced in court and sent to judicial custody,” Mr. Meena said. While prima facie evidence suggests rape, name of the accused was not disclosed by the police. Medical examination has been conducted on the victim and a report is awaited. However, the girl is “safe and returned to her family” in Karanjtoli, the SP said. An interim compensation of Rs. 60, 000 will be given to the victim within the next few days, he said.
