Mehbooba urged to roll out GST on time

Finance Minister Jaitley warns that failure to do so would have adverse affects

Finance, Defence and Corporate Affairs Minister Arun Jaitley has urged Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to take all necessary steps to ensure that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime is rolled out in the State along with the rest of the country on July 1 and warned that failure to do so would adversely affect its consumers as well as businesses.

After the passage of an ordinance last week by the Kerala government to enable the new indirect tax system, Jammu and Kashmir remains the only State that is yet to pass the State GST law and is unlikely to implement GST from July 1.

In a letter to Ms. Mufti, the Finance Minister implored her to send the State’s concurrence on the Constitutional amendments enabling the GST regime for the order of the President, ‘with any modifications as considered necessary’.
