Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam Golmei on Saturday slammed the Opposition leaders for allegedly ganging up with the Naga People’s Front (NPF) whose open agenda, he said, was to break up Manipur for merging the “Naga-inhabited areas” with Nagaland.
This showed that the 13 Opposition parties in the State had “gone against the wishes of the people.”
He was speaking at a one-day political conference of the ruling Congress at Langthabal in Imphal West district.

Mr. Golmei said the Nagaland-based NPF had contested the last Assembly elections in Manipur in January 2012 with the open agenda of “carving out the Naga areas.”
He also took exception to the statement of Communist Party of India secretary Nara Moirangthem that the Congress bagged 42 seats in the 60-member House through “unfair means.”
The Congress candidates had contested the elections in the face of bomb and gun attacks, he said.

All these years, the Opposition parties have been attacking the Congress for attempting the ‘division’ of Manipur since it had signed a merger agreement with the United Naga Integration Council on August 4, 1972 which said, inter alia , that the party supported the demand for the unification of the “Naga areas.”
