Man found dead in custody

A 35-year-old man accused of motorcycle theft was found dead in custody at the Jarwal Road police station in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday. The police said he had hanged himself in the toilet of the lock-up. Kapil Muni Singh, station in-charge, and Shivakant Rai, constable, have been suspended for dereliction of duty.

Inspector-General of Police (Public Grievances) Ashok Mutha Jain told presspersons that Dinesh Singh, son of Amar Singh, from Bharta village in the Kaiserganj police station limits in Bahraich was arrested with a stolen motorcycle by the Jarwal Road police at 4.30 a.m. He was put in the lock-up around 5.30 a.m. He hanged himself from the latch of the toilet door with the help of the cloth of his jacket.

He was taken to the District Hospital, but died on the way. The body has been sent for autopsy.
