A 35-year-old man died here after he was injured in police lathi-charge while protesting against the alleged murder of his cousin, the police said on Wednesday.

The deceased is a relative of Shaariq (11), whose body was found in the fields in Ghatampur, Mr Tiwari said.

Shaariq’s father Wali Mohammad has alleged that one Kuldeep, living in his neighbourhood, and his friend had killed his son as they were upset with his (Shaariq) friendship with a girl from the same village, the SP said.

Mr Tiwari said that Kuldeep was arrested on Tuesday and while he was being taken to the police station, Shaariq’s family, along with Jasbir and other villagers, created an uproar.

The police resorted to lathicharge in which Jasbir received injuries and died in hospital, Mr Tiwari added

The villagers staged a protest and blocked the Kanpur-Hamirpur road demanding removal of police personnel responsible for the lathi-charge.

Extra police force and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel have been deployed in the village, the SP said.

He said the chowki in-charge, Bholendra Chaturvedi, was removed from the police station and the District Magistrate has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. -- PTI
