The Congress Party will launch its campaign for the upcoming state assembly polls on September 1, senior leader Narayan Rane announced on Friday.

“We will light a torch at Hutatma Chowk in Mumbai which will be carried to the different districts in Maharashtra,” said Mr Rane who heads the party’s campaign committee.

Interestingly, when Mr Rane had rebelled against the party last month, he had predicted a defeat for the Congress in the assembly polls. “Now that I am heading the campaign committee, my views have changed,” he told reporters.

He said the party’s would focus on showcasing its own achievements and exposing how the Bhartiya Janata Party was trying to take credit for the work done by the previous UPA government. “They are on an inauguration spree but most of the projects were started by the Congress government,” said Mr Rane.

He also said voters were disillusioned by the promises made by the Modi government. “All they have experienced in the last few months is price rise,” he said.
