University had announced tests, later scrapped the decision

The impasse at Jadavpur University over admissions to undergraduate courses continues with the students on Wednesday laying siege to the main administrative complex and gheraoing the Vice-Chancellor and other university authorities.

Earlier in the day, the university announced its decision of doing away with admission tests in six departments of the humanities stream. Last month JU had announced that it will conduct admission tests and later shelved it.

“The notification for the admission tests shall be withdrawn as per the university’s Executive Council resolution. This year we will not hold admission tests in all the Arts departments,” said Chiranjib Bhattacharya, officiating Registrar of JU. The university authorities also said that this year admission to the humanities department will be conducted on the basis of marks obtained in the Higher Secondary examination or equivalent examinations.

The students kept V-C Suranjan Das gheraoed till late on Wednesday night. The students alleged that the university has retracted from its earlier decision of holding admission tests under pressure from State’s Higher Education Department.
