The Indian National Lok Dal and the Bahujan Samaj Party on Tuesday jointly started a State-wide agitation, demanding immediate completion of the controversial Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal.
As workers and leaders of both the parties presented themselves for court arrest in Bhiwani under the Jail Bharo agitation, INLD leader Abhay Singh Chautala said the BJP governments, both at the Centre and the State, were conspiring against the interests of Haryana by not constructing the SYL canal despite the Supreme Court’s order in favour of Haryana.
“The Centre and BJP government in Haryana have an insensitive approach. They do not realise that Haryana is staring at a disaster with its legitimate share from the river waters getting delayed,” he said, adding that parts of south Haryana have slipped into the ‘dark zone’ with regard to groundwater.

‘Land to go barren’
“Development in the (south) region was undertaken based on the confidence that the water needs of the region, both agricultural and residential, would be adequately met with the water from the rivers through SYL canal. But now that it appears that this region is on the brink of becoming barren,” he said.
