Indefinite curfew in Sonitpur

An indefinite curfew was imposed on areas in the Gingia police station limits and the Borgang police outpost in Sonitpur district of Assam on Sunday as violence broke out a day after four decomposed bodies were recovered.

The four persons went missing after miscreants fired indiscriminately in the Behali Reserved Forest, along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, killing 11 persons on January 29.

Sonitpur Deputy Commissioner Lalit Gogoi told

The Hindu that the police first resorted to a baton charge when some people, blocking National Highway 52, threw stones, damaging a police vehicle and another with the Arunachal Pradesh registration number.

The violence occurred as the family members and relatives were cremating the bodies on the banks of the Borgang after post mortem.

Mr. Gogoi said the situation on the entire stretch, from the Borgang police outpost to the Gingia police station, was brought under control.

Several organisations had imposed an economic blockade on Arunachal Pradesh from January 30 to February 5 to protest the killings.

They withdrew the blockade after the State government assured them that it would consider their demands. One of their demands was that Arunachal Pradesh arrest and hand over to the Assam Police those involved in the January 29 attack.

The Assam government has moved the Union Ministry of Home Affairs for a CBI probe and urged Arunachal Pradesh to arrest and hand over the “six conspirators” of the attack, thought to be from Papumpare district.
