Incessant rains in Goa disrupt public life

One person suspected drowned while several minor incidents of landslides, flooding and submerging of low-lying areas, disruption of traffic have been reported due to incessant rains which lashed Goa for last 24 hours, on Saturday.

Public life has been put out of gear across the State on Saturday even as the Goa Meteorological Laboratory reported high rains of 9 inches during previous 24 hours on Saturday evening.

The continued rains for three days from Thursday have proved a dampener for the annual Ganesh festivities which began on Friday across the State.

On the outskirts of Panaji, the Assembly constituency represented by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, several incidents of flooding in low-lying areas were reported since Saturday morning. After Chief Minister personally supervised the rescue operations, people in the flooded areas have been shifted to safer places, an official spokesperson told The Hindu on Saturday evening.

One Chandan Salgaoncar (50), Mandrem-Pernem in north Goa was reported missing and suspected to have drowned in the flooded areas of Mandrem, police said.

Reports coming in from Margao and many parts of the State said that evacue work was on to take people from low-lying areas and land slide-affected to safer areas.

Cities reported traffic chaos as roads have been submerged in the rains.

The Meteorological Department here on Saturday cautioned fishermen not to venture at sea during next 24 hours predicting inclement weather at the sea.
