Goans oppose coal-terminal expansion

Panaji: A large crowd of environmentalists, MLAs, and citizens from across the State gathered in Vasco, South Goa, on Wednesday opposing the coal-terminal expansion plan of berth 5A-6A, which is to be operated by South West Port Ltd. under the jurisdiction of Mormugao Port Trust (MPT).

Wednesday was the first day of the three-day environmental hearing organised by the Goa State Pollution Control Board.

Over 200 police personnel were deployed at the venue. South Goa District Magistrate Swapnil Naiksaid around 1,000 people attended the hearing.

Environmental activists and several others raised various issues and opposed the coal dust pollution that would result from the expansion facility.
