The activists of the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) said plans are being made to revive the party, which was once the dominant political party in the Darjeeling Hills.

GNLF activists were keeping a low profile after GNLF chief Subhas Ghising was driven out of Darjeeling in 2008 by the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) and he had to take shelter in neighbouring Jalpaiguri district.

GNLF activist B B Pradhan said the party leadership has asked all party activists to revive the party from September as the people in the hills are not very happy with the GJM after signing of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) accord with the Centre and West Bengal government.

Many people in the Darjeeling Hills are against the GTA and are showing their inclination for the GNLF, Mr. Pradhan claimed.

The GNLF was formed by Subhas Ghising in 1980. During the 1980s, the GNLF led an intensive campaign for the creation of a separate Gorkhaland state in the Darjeeling Hills.

On August, 22, 1988, GNLF chief Subhash Ghisingh, signed the Darjeeling Hill Accord, which created the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC).

Mr. Ghisingh was the chairman of the DGHC from 1988 to 2004 for three successive terms and was appointed the sole caretaker of the DGHC from 2005 to 2008 as no election for the DGHC was held.
