An arduous, heroic 31-hour rescue saga of a minor in Pune’s Shirur Taluk ended in tragedy after the four-year-old child succumbed during treatment on Monday morning.

The son of a labourer, had accidentally slipped into a 200-foot open borewell in Mandavgan Pharata village on Saturday. The child, who was playing, failed to notice the pit of the borewell and slithered down the abyss within minutes to be trapped in its dank environs.

A terrified Sunil was forced endure an agonisingly painful day-and-a-half wait after frantic administration officials, along with the fire brigade personnel and medical officers rushed to the spot on being alerted by local farmers.

Two JCB machines were urgently pressed into service while rescue teams dug parallel holes near the borewell while oxygen was simultaneously pumped down.

His rescue on Sunday night raised hopes, which were cruelly dashed after he failed to respond to treatment at the hospital, much to the shock of his distraught parents.
