Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Monday paid a surprise visit to the Nagpur central jail, which has been in the news over the last few days for the escape of inmates and recovery of mobile phones.

“Just paid a surprise visit to Central Jail, Nagpur. A lot still needs to be done. Entire jail administration requires a revamp,” the CM tweeted from his official twitter handle.

The visit was nowhere in the CM’s schedule when he landed at Nagpur airport in the morning. However, on the way back home from the airport, he asked his driver to go to the jail, surprising his personal assistants and security guards.

Five inmates had escaped and more than 100 mobile phones were recovered from the jail earlier this month.

Mr. Fadnavis was criticised by his opponents over the deteriorating law and order situation in his hometown. Some also advised him to give up the Home department and get a “full-time” Home Minister.

The CM responded by saying that he was not “a part-time home minister” but an “over-time home minister.”
