Eight Maoists surrender in Bastar

Eight members of the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist) surrendered before police in Kondagan district of Bastar region on Monday taking the total number of surrendered and arrested Maoists in the district to 20 in the month of June alone.

“Most of those who surrendered today [Monday], are the members of the Maoists’ Local Operating Squad [LOS] and Janatana Sarkar. They were involved in various offences of firing, arson and blasts,” Kondagaon Superintendent of Police Abhishekh Meena told The Hindu .

‘Active in border areas’

“All of them were active in border areas of Kondagaon and Narayanpurdistricts. They [surrendered Maoists] expressed a wish to join the mainstream,” said the SP adding that the Bastar region could witness many more surrenders in the coming months.

Kondagaon police had arrested four Maoists earlier this week and eight members of the Maoists’ Jantana Sarkar surrendered in the second week of June.
