Demolition of the Muzaffarpur shelter home, where 34 minor girls were sexually abused, began on Thursday under magisterial supervision. Earlier, the illegally constructed top two floors of the four-storey shelter home were vacated by the Muzaffarpur civic bodies.
“A five-member committee has been constituted for demolition work of the illegally constructed portions of the shelter home…we’re taking all necessary precautions in the demolition work as the building is located in a narrow space surrounded by dense population,” Commissioner of the Muzaffarpur Municipal Corporation Sanjay Dubey told local journalists. The demolition work started on Thursday under the supervision of an engineer-cum-magistrate Suresh Kumar. “We cannot use JCB or other heavy machines to demolish it as the area is densely populated…we’ve to do it manually and we’ve began the process from roof of the top floor,” said Mr. Kumar. The demolition work may go on for the next two months, he added.

The State funded shelter home “Balika Grih” was being managed by an NGO “Seva Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti” run by Brajesh Thakur, the main accused in the sexual abuse case.
Brajesh Thakur is currently lodged in the Jalandhar jail of Punjab. Of late, his family members had informed the Supreme Court, which is monitoring the case, that he was not keeping well in the jail.
