Curfew in Jaipur, one person dead

One person died and a dozen others were injured in the violent clashes between the local residents and policemen outside the Ramganj police station in the Walled City here late on Friday night. Curfew has been clamped in the areas falling under four police stations in the city and mobile Internet services suspended.

The violence erupted when the people took exception to a policemen allegedly hitting a man riding on a motorcycle with baton during a routine checking of vehicles in Ramganj area. After an altercation with the police personnel on the spot, hundreds of people gathered at the police station and hurled stones.

The police resorted to lathicharge and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the crowd which set an electricity transformer and a few vehicles, including an ambulance, on fire. Several cops were also injured in the violence.

Jaipur Police Commissioner Sanjay Agarwal said the curfew had been imposed till further orders in the Ramganj, Manak Chowk, Subhash Chowk and Galta Gate police station areas.
