The Delhi High Court on Monday once again extended the anticipatory bail granted to Aam Aadmi Party MLA Jarnail Singh in a case of alleged assault on an MCD engineer in Krishna Park area of West Delhi. The engineer had accused Mr. Singh of leading a crowd of locals to attack him when he tried to demolish an illegal construction there.

The engineer alleged that the AAP leader, along with others, not only prevented the municipal corporation team from carrying out the demolition, but even assaulted him in public and tore up the papers of the clearance when they were shown to him. Subsequently, the engineer registered an FIR against Mr. Singh at the Tilak Nagar police station.

Justice Indermeet Kaur of the High Court extended the interim protection to Mr. Singh from arrest till December 15. Mr. Singh, who represents Tilak Nagar constituency in the Delhi Assembly, had earlier been granted relief on May 18, which was later extended till Monday. A trial court had earlier refused him anticipatory bail.

The Court said Mr. Singh had been asked to cooperate with the investigation, which he had joined. The police could call him any time till their investigation in the matter was pending, said the Court.

The Delhi Assembly had referred the case of alleged harassment of Mr. Singh by the Delhi Police to the Privileges Committee of the House. Police, meanwhile, had declared Mr. Singh an absconder after booking him on the basis of a complaint of assault.
