Constable killed after standing up to eve-teasers

March 12, 2012 01:21 am | Updated 01:21 am IST - KOLKATA:

A police constable, allegedly beaten up by a group of miscreants who harassed his niece three days ago, died of injuries here on Sunday.

Ashim Dam, a resident of Birati on the northern fringes of the city, died at a private hospital. His family alleged that although they had named the seven persons who perpetrated the attack, none had been arrested so far.

“The incident occurred on the day of Holi [March 8]. Prayers were being organised not far from our house and we were all there. Some of these youth passed by and misbehaved with me. It was a clear case of eve-teasing. When my uncle protested, initially they went away, but they returned and turned violent,” the victim's niece told journalists.

They came armed with chains, hockey sticks and attacked Ashim Dam. He received injuries on his head. They also attacked some of the women of the household, she added.

The family claims that the assailants are known to them and have been named in the complaint filed with the police, but they failed to take any action.

A senior police official said: “The complaint was filed on March 9. The family has mentioned some names, but we have not made any arrests so far.”

State's Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Chandrima Bhattacharya visited the spot and told journalists that she had asked the police to take action against the perpetrators.
