Congress workers try to break police barricade during a protest on Mondayagainst rising crime in Cuttack.

Hundreds of Congress workers led by Cuttack city president Muhammad Moqim on Monday protested in front of the State police headquarters. They submitted a memorandum to IGP (law and order) B N Jha expressing concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the city.

“The concerns expressed by the delegation would be brought to the notice of the Commissionerate police and they would be looked into”, said the IGP.

The Congress criticised the city police on their failure to tackle anti-social elements. Pointing to the last week’s murder of a trader in Malgodown, who was shot dead by unidentified persons in broad daylight, leaders expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation.

“It has been over six days and the city police are still clueless about the identity and motive of the assailants”, Mr. Moqim said, adding that policing has been worsened. In less than two months, the city has witnessed at least three firing incidents and the police have not been able to solve any one of them, he added.

On the other hand, the city Deputy Commissioner of Police, speaking to newsmen, informed that they have got clues which would lead to the culprits of the Malgodown incident.
