The Congress filed a complaint against the BJP to the Election Commission, saying the telecast of Narendra Modi’s roadshow and filing of nomination in Varanasi on Thursday, even as the sixth phase of polling in 117 constituencies was underway elsewhere in the country was a “flagrant violation” of the model code of conduct.
The party also asked for the filing of a first information report against the roadshow, saying it was illegal. The Congress, in its complaint, said visuals of Mr. Modi's roadshow were aired by TV channels, even in those parts of the country that went to the polls, thus violating the election code and the “sanctity of the polls,” Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma said, asking, “Why was the Election Commission not alert to this and why didn't it instruct the media? We want an FIR and notice against the BJP leaders who were present.”
Mr. Sharma also said that the telecast was part of a “well-planned” scheme hatched by the BJP to influence voters in the constituencies that went to the polls on Thursday.
