CM to inaugurate 150th anniversary celebration of Col. Mahim Thakur

Tripura will celebrate 150 birth anniversary of Colonel Mahim Thakur, a visionary with versatile talents. The highly acclaimed member of royal family first paved visit of Nobel laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore and other laurels to the erstwhile princely state.

“We have planned several programmes to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahim Thakur”, his granddaughter and co-convenor of the organising committee Helen Debbarma said on Friday. She said the yearlong programmes would get underway on July 22.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkar would inaugurate the celebration jointly organised by Colonel Mahim Thakur Memorial Forum and a committee set up for the purpose. Committee member and renowned writer Bikach Choudhury said besides Rabindra Nath Tagore, Mahim Thakur acted as a bridge between the royal family and scholars like Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose, Sir Rajendra Nath, historian Jadhunath Sarkar and many other famed personalities.

According to Mr Choudhury, Mahim Thakur who was accorded ‘Colonel’ title had colourful and versatile personalities. “He was an able administrator, a diplomat, a good photographer, writer and a historian”, he added.

An important city junction in Agartala known as Colonel Chowmuhani (Square) was named after Mahim Thakur. His fiver carved statue funded by the state government and Agartala Municipal Council would be installed at this square next month.
