The climate over the years in the Koraput region has changed to a great extent resulting in barren mountains, drying of streams and serious damage to crops due to the erratic nature of rainfall. While people in rural areas have to walk miles to fetch water, pollution of industries was the major concern of urban people of the region.
Such were the themes which children took up as the base of their paintings for posters to describe the impact of climate change in Koraput region at the district level meet of children being organised by Pragati, Koraput, in association with SSA-Koraput and with support from Trocaire.
The two-day meet was attended by children from all the 14 blocks of the district and hundreds of children from Koraput town.

While some children were in the process of exhibiting individual talent to express their opinion on the issue by writing on sheets of paper, some other sections took the support of painting posters in sharing their expressions. Special sessions were organised for the children to create different items of daily use with eco-friendly material. While it was an occasion to get sensitized to a safe environment, it was also an opportunity for the children to learn from each others’ resourcefulness, Muralidhar Swain, DPC of SSA, said.
While a booklet would be published with the essays written by children, posters would be printed taking some selected paintings, Pravakar Adhikari, secretary of Pragati, added. Sachin Jadhav, District Collector of Koraput, interacted with the children and appreciated their skills which they showed in different forms.
