BSP supremo Mayawati on Monday said her party will not oppose the appointment of Nripendra Misra as Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister and support the TRAI Amendment Bill in Parliament.

“Centre has the right to choose its officers and decide how they want to run the government,” she said outside Parliament when asked whether her party will oppose the Bill.

The NDA government moved the Bill to remove a legal hurdle in appointment of former chairman of telecom regulatory body Mr. Misra as Personal Secretary to the Prime Minister.

The NDA does not enjoy majority in the Upper House and depends on support of other parties like SP, BSP and AIDMK to sail through.

“We have no objection to Mr. Misra’s appointment as he is a good officer. Government at the state or Centre can choose its officer,” she said.

The government is keen on getting the Bill passed as it aims to replace its ordinance, or executive order, amending the Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) Act, which barred Mr. Misra from taking any government post.
