: Slum children of Berhampur came up with suggestions for child-friendly transportation in the city on occasion of ‘World day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims’ on Sunday.
To mark the occasion, Berhampur Children’s Federation had organised a meeting to discuss issues relating to road safety and traffic.
Representatives from 22 childrens’ clubs active in different slums of the city participated and provided inputs on better traffic management, road safety and child-friendly transportation.

According to these children, in a congested city like Berhampur, children especially from the poor backgrounds are most prone to road accidents.
President of the federation Anjali Patra said road safety is a major issue as their families are poor and any injury to children is a major economic burden for their parents.
The children’s federation has recently started the process to educate slum children about basic road safety norms.

Children were also critical of the administration and local Municipal Corporation not providing ample playing space for children throughout the city, because of which children end up playing on roads.
They will hand over these demands to authorities in future. They demanded child friendly zebra crossings at all major squares. They also wanted ‘compulsory road safety education’ to be taken up in all schools.
