The Central Bureau of Investigation has said that it reached the conclusion that the two girls found hanging from a tree near Badaun in Uttar Pradesh on May 28 had committed suicide on the basis of scientific evidence and witness statements.

“Medical experts have found classical signs of hanging, including slight protrusion of tongues and presence of faecal matter. There was absolutely no evidence of sexual assault, no presence of male DNA on the girls’ clothes, no external injuries and their personal belongings were intact. Besides, no one in the vicinity had heard any commotion,” a CBI official said.

The official said a live dummy test established that the girls were capable enough to climb the tree, tie the knots and hang themselves from the branches.

The agency found three members of the girls’ family, including their fathers and Nazru, guilty of destroying evidence and misleading the probe. They had allegedly prepared several drafts of the initial complaint implicating different persons, before the local police registered the FIR.

Apart from seeking their trial, the CBI may recommend action against the police officers who allegedly made wrong arrests.

The CBI said the local police, on the basis of a false complaint arrested Pappu Yadav, his two brothers and two policemen for alleged rape and murder of the girls, after they were found hanging from the branches of a mango tree on the outskirts of the village.

Pappu and four other accused were given a clean chit after lie-detector tests. However, polygraph tests found Nazru, who found one of the victims in an intimate position with Pappu Yadav, and other relatives of the girls deceptive. The CBI could not establish what exactly happened to the girls between 11.40 p.m. on May 27 and 5 a.m. on May 28.
