A group of burglars who stole a cash box from an ATM outlet in Vidisha, ran out of luck when the box accidentally fell from their getaway vehicle in front of the official bungalow of the Superintendent of Police.

The robbers struck at the State Bank of India ATM on Tuesday night. The police said there was no security guard, but the burglary had been captured on CCTV. The robbers prised open the ATM’s vault with a gas cutter to gain access to the box.

As they sped away with the loot, they ran into a police patrol team. The robbers tried to escape, but the cash box fell off their vehicle in the process near the SP’s bungalow close to the circuit house, the police said.

Bank officials have handed over the CCTV footage to the police. They said despite reminders, the security agency had not provided a guard at the ATM outlet. The police suspect the role of more than two persons in the burglary. “The cash box is in our custody and a search is on to nab the robbers,” Vidisha SP Nagendra Pateria said.
